Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) Calculator
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana pays more than PPF and is taxed the same way, which is not at all. The trade is time: the account runs until the girl turns 21, with deposits for the first 15 years. This SSY calculator shows the maturity amount at the current notified rate.
Where it goes
- What's actually left₹21.13 lakh
- Inflation at 6%−₹50.69 lakh
Worth knowing
Is this really tax-free?
Yes. Contributions, interest and maturity are all exempt — the rare EEE treatment. It is why this beats a fixed deposit paying a higher headline rate, once you are in the 30% slab.
Why does this not ask for my income tax slab?
Because nothing here is taxed, at any stage, whatever you earn. Your slab decides the tax on things like deposit interest — there is none to decide here.
Where does the rate come from?
2026-Q2's notified rate. The government resets small-savings rates every quarter, so this is not fixed for the life of the account.

₹1.50 lakh a year into each, for 15 years, on ₹15.00 lakh of other income — a 15.6% rate on interest — and 6% inflation. The return is what you actually keep, after tax and after inflation.

Over 15 years, Equity mutual fund keeps the most — +5.41% a year in real terms — which is a different order from the one the headline rates suggest, because tax and lock-in do most of the deciding.
Understanding this calculator
Sukanya Samriddhi pays more than PPF and is taxed the same way — which is to say, not at all. What it asks for in return is a long and fairly rigid commitment.
Two periods, not one
The structure confuses people because the deposit window and the account life are different lengths. You contribute for the first fifteen years. The account then continues earning, without further deposits, until the girl turns 21.
Those final years of untouched compounding at a tax-free rate do a large share of the work, which is why starting early matters more here than in most products — an account opened at age two has far longer to run than one opened at ten.
Who can open one, and the limits
- **One account per girl child**, opened by a parent or guardian before she turns 10.
- **A maximum of two accounts per family**, with an exception for twins.
- **₹1.5 lakh a financial year** is the statutory ceiling, shared with your other Section 80C contributions under the old regime.
- **Partial withdrawal** of up to half the balance becomes available for higher education after she turns 18.
Against PPF, which is the real comparison
Both are exempt at every stage, both are government-set, both cap contributions at ₹1.5 lakh a year — and that ceiling is shared, so money into one is money not into the other. The differences are the ones worth deciding on.
| Sukanya Samriddhi | PPF | |
|---|---|---|
| Rate | Higher of the two | Lower |
| Who the money belongs to | The girl, at maturity | You |
| Term | Until she turns 21 | 15 years, extendable in 5-year blocks |
| Deposits required for | First 15 years | The full term, if extended with contributions |
| Can be used for anything | Education and marriage, with conditions | Yes |
The rate advantage is real but it is not the deciding factor. The deciding factor is who controls the money and when. SSY is money you have committed to one person for one broad purpose; PPF is money you retain control of. If the goal is genuinely her education, the rigidity is a feature — it protects the fund from every other demand on the household over two decades.
The honest limitation is flexibility. The money belongs to the girl, is locked for a long time, and cannot be redirected if family circumstances change. That rigidity is exactly what makes it effective as a dedicated education fund, and exactly what makes it unsuitable as general savings.
One practical point on timing: because the account runs to age 21 regardless of when it opens, the compounding years after deposits stop are decided entirely by the age at which you start. Opening at two gives four more untouched years than opening at six — and those are the years when the balance is largest.
